AAN NIETS OVERLEDEN (DIED OF NOTHING) – FIRST FEATURE FILM by the Dutch-Caribbean director and actor RAYMI SAMBO. An art house film, with an all-black cast, and with leading actors; Perla Thissen, Jaike Belfor, Erwin Boschmans en Jonata Taal. The central theme of the story is the culture of shame around homosexuality in the Surinam/ Caribbean community. What if you’re seriously ill, but it's unthinkable for your mother to talk about your illness and its cause? What if you truly and deeply love your son, but the profound shame around his illness forces you, his own mother, to rather declare him dead? ‘Died of Nothing’ shows what shame and fear will do to a mothers’ love, once the truth becomes even more unbearable than your sons’ death.” Melkweg Cinema - Tue 24, 8:30 pm De Balie Cinema - Fr 27, 7:30 and 9:00 pm

How does your event support the AIDS 2018 Conference Objectives? All Affiliated Independent Events need to clearly reflect and support the conference objectives. Please explain how your event supports / relates to them.
In nowadays (Dutch) society we tend to think there is no more shame. But shame is invisible. And it is there, still, even in the open Dutch society: parents being ashamed about their homosexual child, or about a child with HIV, even people being ashamed about their own homosexuality or their disease. Director Raymi Sambo, born in Curacao, knows the impact of shame, here in Holland, but even more so in the Caribbean society he has been brought up in. Died of Nothing isn’t just about the shame around HIV and Aids but about everything a society hides, sweeps under the carpet, to keep up appearances. In the film we raise the issue of this culture of shame, we want to break the silence, to expose painful situations and to confront ourselves and the audience.
